Night Train to Odessa

Night Train to Odessa

My berth was bottom
three others
 strolled in

They clamored
for places
 for trip
to begin

Window was open
could see
 birches
fly by

Thousands of trees
white trunks
tall
as the sky

Our train
slowed
for
villages
the poor
went by

Russia's a big
country
multiple acres
 passed our eye

Sleep was uneven
 we rocked
and rolled
the noise
was clacking
clacking
like drum
roll
flying high

We came to Ukraine
wheat fields everywhere
Russia's "bread basket"
or so it was told
